The Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce the Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation has contributed $5,000 in support of iTEAMS Xtreme Spartanburg, GSSM’s four-day technology, computer science and entrepreneurship camp for rising 7th and 8th graders, held in 13 counties across the state. GSSM hosted iTEAMS Xtreme at Carver Middle School July 6-9, 2015.
iTEAMS Xtreme is a day camp geared to inspire students to pursue careers in the fields of computer science, technology and entrepreneurship through hands-on, team-based projects. During iTEAMS Xtreme, students select from one of the following challenges: developing mobile apps using App Inventor and android phones, designing 3D models using OpenSCAD software and 3D printers, or creating an interactive object using MIT’s Scratch 2D animation software and the MaKey MaKey invention kit.
Piedmont Natural Gas serves more than 1 million residential, commercial, industrial and power generation utility customers in portions of North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The Piedmont Natural Gas Foundation was established in 2004, and has since awarded more than $8.7 million in grants to qualifying organizations throughout their service territory.
Commenting on the grant, Mike Durham, community relations manager for Piedmont Natural Gas, said, “Programs like iTEAMS Xtreme help our nation remain competitive in the global economy by encouraging students to pursue STEM-related careers. Piedmont Natural Gas is committed to furthering STEM education, which is why we’re proud to support this incredible hands-on learning opportunity that will benefit so many students in South Carolina.”
“We are grateful to Piedmont Natural Gas for investing in our Spartanburg County camp for the second year in a row,” says Kim Bowman, CEO, GSSM Foundation. “When students are engaged at a young age with technologies like the ones taught during iTEAMS Xtreme, the possibilities are endless. Many students leave our camps with a dramatically different college and career plan then when they arrived; they are excited about all of the new ideas.”
