Science & Mathematics Governor’s School Bringing Student Art Exhibition to Florence

February 27, 2017

March 5-April 15 – Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library, Florence, SC

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics' (GSSM) Art in the Interim and Open Art Studio student artwork will be on exhibition at the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library’s Morris Gallery, March 5 – April 15, 2017, in conjunction with National Youth Art Month. The opening reception for the exhibit is 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2017.

January interim, one of GSSM's unique academic offerings, is a mini-mester during which students select from a wide range of elective courses or trips. One of the courses, Art in the Interim, taught by GSSM's Visual Arts Coordinator Patz Fowle and GSSM Artist in Residence Mike Fowle, is an annual favorite.

During this year’s Art in the Interim, students created 3D kinetic sculptures and reinterpreted and painted revived versions of historic works of art.

“Teaching and sharing a life-long love of art with students at GSSM is an exhilarating adventure,” said Patz Fowle. “Each time I step into GSSM’s Art Studio, I am collaborating with some of the brightest students our state has to offer. It’s thrilling to work with the leaders and creative innovators of tomorrow.”

Fowle also coordinates the GSSM Open Art Studio, open daily, for GSSM students to explore art techniques, further refine their artistic expression and find an outlet for self-expression.

The Morris Gallery is located on the second floor of the Doctors Bruce and Lee Foundation Library, 509 South Dargan Street, Florence, SC 29506. The library is open Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; and Sunday, 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact Patz Fowle fowle@gssm.k12.sc.us or Aubrey Carroll at acarroll@florencelibrary.org.
