September 15, 2014

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to announce that Dr. Taliver Heath, GSSM class of 1990 and Senior Staff Software Engineer for Google, will address the student body as part of the School's SmartChat Speaker Series. His presentation will take place at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, on the GSSM campus in Hartsville, SC.

Heath, who currently lives in Mountain View, CA, with his wife and two children, was in the first graduating class from GSSM. He received his bachelor’s degree in both computer science and physics in 1995 from Florida State University. After teaching Nuclear Power in the Navy for 4 years and achieving rank of Lieutenant Commander, he went to Rutgers University in New Jersey to earn his Ph.D. in Computer Science.

Heath has been working at Google since 2005, and is currently a Senior Staff Software Engineer. He has worked on data center site selection, the first White House Town Hall, and data center power control.

“Our faculty, staff and students are all very excited to hear about Tal’s experiences during his time at GSSM and since,” says Dr. Murray Brockman, GSSM president. “Some of our students are still getting acquainted to life on campus, and we know that he will provide encouragement as well as advice for them as they begin their journey.”

A program of the BlueCross BlueShield Economics & Finance Institute and funded by the GSSM Foundation, the SmartChat Speaker series is designed to enhance students' education while inspiring them through the stories and experiences from GSSM alumni, as well as from the Palmetto States' leading innovators in biology, chemistry, computer science, drama and film, economics, history, physics and writing.
