HARTSVILLE, S.C. (Sept. 16, 2025) — The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) partnered with AFL, a global fiber optic manufacturer headquartered in Duncan, S.C., to offer GoSciTech STEM camps in summer 2025. AFL’s $8,000 gift provided financial aid for Upstate students with economic need to attend day camps at Greenville Technical College and Spartanburg Community College, the residential camp in Hartsville, and virtual camp.
“At AFL, we’re committed to strengthening the communities where we work and live, and supporting camps like GoSciTech aligns with our mission,” said Angie Myers, director of community engagement at AFL. “By helping remove financial barriers for students, we’re investing in the next generation of innovators who will drive both our region’s economic growth and technological advancement.”
Each summer, GSSM’s GoSciTech camps inspire sixth through 10th grade students through a wide variety of fun and challenging STEM courses. In 2025, day camps were held at all 16 South Carolina technical colleges, making locations more accessible to families statewide.
“GSSM is proud to partner with AFL to deliver transformative STEM experiences for students across South Carolina,” said Danny Dorsel, president of GSSM. “AFL’s core values emphasize being a group of talented individuals who strive to make a difference. Together with GSSM’s dedicated faculty and staff, we are living out that mission and making a lasting impact on the lives of children.”
AFL has been a longstanding partner and friend to GSSM, supporting life-changing STEM opportunities for South Carolina students for more than 15 years.
