July 30, 2025
HARTSVILLE, S.C. (July 30, 2025) ─ The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) received a $5,000 grant from the Duke Energy Foundation to provide scholarships for students from Darlington, Dillon, Chesterfield and Marlboro counties to attend GSSM’s summer STEM programs.
The grant reflects the Duke Energy Foundation’s ongoing commitment to education and community enrichment by empowering young learners to explore academic interests and potential career pathways in science, technology, engineering and math.
“At Duke Energy, we believe in powering the future—not just through electricity, but also through education,” said Lauren Griggs, district manager of government and community relations for Chesterfield, Darlington, Dillon and Marlboro counties. “We are proud of the work the Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics does to provide hands-on STEM experiences that inspire the next generation of innovators and problem solvers.”
GSSM’s summer camps offer immersive, interactive experiences that introduce students to advanced technologies and innovative instruction in a collaborative learning environment. The programs are designed to ignite curiosity and encourage deeper exploration of STEM disciplines.
By removing financial barriers, the grant helped ensure that students from under-resourced communities could participate in transformative learning experiences.
“Our longstanding partnership with the Duke Energy Foundation thrives because we share a common mission—one that values collaboration, innovation and measurable impact,” said GSSM President Danny Dorsel, a member of the Class of 1990. “Thanks to Duke Energy’s generosity, the students and families who participate in our STEM programs experience that impact in meaningful, tangible ways.”
This gift reinforces the shared goal of GSSM and the Duke Energy Foundation to prepare young South Carolinians with the knowledge, skills and opportunities necessary to excel in STEM fields and contribute to the future success of their communities.
