GSSM Hosts Inside GSSM Family Day for Statewide STEM Engagement

March 10, 2026

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (March 10, 2026) ─ The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) welcomed hundreds of parents, students, educators, and community partners to its annual Inside GSSM event on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Families from across the state spent the day exploring hand-on STEM activities at South Carolina’s premier residential public high school in Hartsville.

“We hope that each family left INSIDE GSSM with a deeper appreciation for STEM fields and a bit of inspiration and motivation to explore more, whether through continued learning in their area or by considering opportunities with our programs,” said Irene Middleton, outreach director of academic year programs.

Interactive activities showcased creative learning opportunities like creating liquid nitrogen ice cream, exploring artificial intelligence, and making archaeological discoveries. Several families noted the accessibility of the activities that appealed to people of all ages.

“Families from across our state were able to experience GSSM and get a taste of the joy for learning that is embedded in the GSSM culture,” said Randy La Cross, vice president for outreach. “Awesome learning opportunities filled the grounds, halls, gym, and classrooms. Inside GSSM was truly a day of inspiration, innovation, and imagination.”

GSSM faculty, staff, and students connected with visitors to share insights about the school’s academic and residential experience, while the GSSM Center for Science Education & Outreach facilitated programming designed to inspire curiosity and strengthen interest in STEM fields among younger learners.

GSSM is a two-year public residential high school that provides students with a rigorous academic program in a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment. The GSSM Center for Science Education & Outreach extends the school’s mission by creating opportunities for younger students to engage in STEM education and prepare for advanced studies and careers.

Because of community support and partnerships, Inside GSSM will continue to serve as a signature event, fostering connections and highlighting the importance of STEM education across the state.
