GSSM Remembers Sen. Hugh Leatherman

The SC Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) community mourns the passing of Sen. Hugh Leatherman and extends heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Sen. Leatherman provided four decades of leadership to the people of South Carolina as a strong advocate for his district, a statewide force for economic development, and a friend to education.
He was vital to GSSM’s founding and development, having supported the school’s opening in 1988. He broke ground for the school’s campus expansion in 2008, and was named the 2011 recipient of the Townes Award for his years of leadership and service to the Palmetto State.
We will forever appreciate the many contributions our friend Sen. Leatherman made to the school, our region, and our state in a lifetime of public service.
