GSSM Senior’s Art Chosen for 2021 Artfields Jr. Competition

May 4, 2021

HARTSVILLE, SC - GSSM senior Gracie Floyd's anthropomorphic artwork "Domino the Duke" was selected for exhibition in the secondary division of the prestigious ArtFields Jr. 2021 Student Art Competition. This highly selective exhibition based in Lake City, SC has brought together many of the south’s finest artists, and we are honored one of our students was chosen to be among them.

“Congratulations Gracie!” said Ms. Patz Fowle. "We are all so proud of you and your artistic accomplishments over the past two-years. Thank you for sharing your vision and talents which has opened eyes and tickled the soul of many at GSSM, in our local community and across the state!"

Gracie drew it with charcoal, graphite and white ink. In her artist's statement, she said: “My father and I joke at how our dog, Domino, seems to always act haughty and proud when he is with us. It feels as if he was almost a member of nobility in his past life, so I wanted to display him in all his glory. He may just be an unassuming dog on the outside, but on the inside I know that he is something special.”

For acceptance into the show, artwork was judged on the following criteria:

  • Creativity and originality
  • Quality of composition and overall design
  • Technical ability
  • Overall impression of the art. What is the effect of the artwork in general and as a whole? Does the artwork stand on its own as a complete and outstanding work of art?
  • Artist statement

GSSM looks forward to this annual event that celebrates arts programing in schools and South Carolina student artworks from grades K-12. View the rest of this year’s artwork here.
