GSSM Students Chosen as Finalists for South Carolina High School Writing Contest

GSSM students Lucia Stevick-Brown and Winnie Zheng were recently chosen as finalists for the Annual South Carolina High School Writing Contest. They are 2 of the 21 juniors and seniors chosen from all over the state of South Carolina.

To enter the contest, they answered the question, “How can we make South Carolina better?” within 750 words. The competition accepted essays, poetry, fiction, drama, short stories, and genre combinations.

Their work will be judged by Jonathan Haupt, executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press. The first, second, and third place winners will be awarded an online publication and a cash prize.

“The first-place winner (chosen from the junior and senior classes) will receive the Walter Edgar Award, which includes $1,000,” SC Honors College said in this year’s FAQ. “The second and third-place winners (chosen from the junior and senior classes) will receive the South Carolina Academy of Authors awards. Generously funded by the South Carolina Academy of Authors, the second-place prize includes $500, and the third-place prize includes $250.”  

In its eighth year, the South Carolina Honors College presented the contest in partnership with the Pat Conroy Literary Center, the South Carolina Academy of Authors, the South Carolina Writers Association, and the South Carolina State Library.
