GSSM Welcomes 157 New Residential Juniors

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics Welcomes 157 New Residential Juniors

Hartsville, SC - The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) is pleased to welcome 157 residential juniors from across the state of South Carolina.

Throughout the middle of August, students moved onto campus to begin their junior and senior years. Wednesday, August 18th was GSSM’s first day of class, kicking off the 2020-2021 school year. This year, GSSM celebrates 157 students representing 87 high schools, 42 school districts and 30 counties. This will be the first full residential semester since 2019 and the largest class yet.

GSSM also welcomed its inaugural STEM Foundations class of 13 juniors. They will be the first students to earn GSSM diplomas while working totally from home.
 
“We are excited to welcome our largest residential junior class on campus as well as over 60 sophomores across the state into our virtual engineering program offered at their home high schools,” said President Daniel Dorsel. “This year also marks the start of yet another way that GSSM is impacting the students in our state through our new STEM Foundations program.  STEM Foundations is an online school with a high-level STEM-focused curriculum. We started this August with a small cohort of juniors who after completing the two-year program will graduate with a GSSM diploma while remaining at home.”

“After an amazing summer of STEM camps on our campus and at local schools, GSSM will be welcoming elementary and middle school students on campus and will be going to their schools to offer school-year transformative STEM educational experiences. It is exciting to see the continued impact that GSSM is having across the state of South Carolina.”

One of only 16 of its kind in the nation, GSSM is a two-year, public, residential high school for juniors and seniors, specializing in the advanced study of science, technology, engineering, entrepreneurship, and math. GSSM offers a transforming education in science, mathematics, and engineering that cultivates joy in learning and builds the confidence to engage as ethical leaders with the world’s most significant issues.
 
GSSM applicants should be South Carolina residents and have at least 10.5 high school credits before the end of the 2021-2022 school year, including Geometry, Algebra I and II, English I and II, a Social Studies course and a Lab Science course.

Founded in 1988, the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics is a nationally recognized school serving over four hundred of the state's most accomplished STEM students in the 10th through 12th grades through its residential and virtual programs.
