GSSM Wins National History Challenge

February 8, 2021

On Saturday, January 30, students from the GSSM Academic Team won the National History Challenge. This victory came after going undefeated in the preliminary rounds (beating teams from Georgia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania), an impressive playoff performance, and two nail-biting final matches.

GSSM entered two teams in the competition. Both finished 3-0 in the preliminaries and advanced to the playoffs as the #2 and #8 seeds, respectively. Team 2 (#8 seed) won its first-round playoff match against Cartersville (GA) with a score of 285 to 135. They then put up a respectable fight against Tartan (MN), the #1 seed, but lost 250 to 200. GSSM Team 2 concluded the day with 4 wins and 1 loss.

Meanwhile, GSSM Team 1 defeated JFK Memorial (NJ) in the quarterfinals. Their next round was against Roseville (MN), which came down to a tense sudden-death overtime period that GSSM won. In the finals Team 1 played Tartan. It was a tight back-and-forth with each team reclaiming a lead, but GSSM pulled through and won with a score of 255 to 195.
