Lucia Brown Wins First Place in Annual SC Writing Contest

May 19, 2021

GSSM Senior Lucia Brown has won first place in the annual South Carolina Writing Contest for her personal essay “I Will Always Be a Product of South Carolina Public Schools.” The piece details her experience as a student, and her advocacy for better conditions for SC's public schools.

The South Carolina High School Writing Contest is hosted by the UofSC Honors College. To enter, each student responded to the prompt “How can we make South Carolina better?” within 750 words. The competition accepted essays, poetry, fiction, drama, short stories, and genre combinations.

“This isn’t just the work of a remarkable burgeoning writer, it is the work of a future champion for the public good – and our Palmetto State always needs more of those,” said Jonathan Haupt, contest judge and executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center.

GSSM Senior Winnie Zheng was included among the 20 other finalists, and both she and Lucia will be published on the South Carolina Honors College website.
