STEM Day on the Go STEAM Lessons
Are you ready to challenge your students with an enriching STEM experience? Do you want to inspire your students while building their confidence in STEM studies? Let us bring a GSSM STEM Day to you!
Traveling to classrooms across the state of South Carolina, the GSSM instructional team offers standards-based, hands-on lessons developed by GSSM curriculum specialists. During their visit, students in grades 3 through 10 will explore and participate in an inquiry-driven activity and project under the STEAM umbrella, including engineering, chemistry, physics, and electronics. Each lesson lasts approximately one hour, and all necessary materials are provided by GSSM. Schools are asked to provide at least one adult chaperone who will remain in the classroom with the instructional team for the lesson.
Due to high demand and limited staffing, requests from schools located over 2 hours from Hartsville and/or requests for multiple days will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and honored when possible. We recommend requests, especially for those requiring extended travel, be submitted as far in advance as possible. Submitting a visit request form is not a guarantee that your request will be honored as submitted, but we will strive to accommodate your school’s needs.
What to Expect from a GSSM STEM Day on the Go:
- GSSM Instructors travel to your school to deliver an enriching STEM experience to your students.
- The STEM experience is a standards-based inquiry learning opportunity that explores a STEM topic of your choice.
- GSSM provides all necessary materials for the lessons.

- Is there a fee to participate in this program?
No, STEM Day on the Go STEAM lessons are offered free to SC schools.
- What space requirements are needed?
Schools should provide a dedicated classroom or learning space per each GSSM instructor for the duration of the visit. Audio/visual technology is preferred. Note, some lessons have special requirements such as access to running water or an outdoor space as outlined in the course catalogue. Please verify that your school can provide these when selecting the lessons at registration.
- Will students build or take anything home?
Some lessons may include items students build to keep, while others focus on the learning experience itself.
- What grade levels does STEM Days on the Go serve?
STEAM lesson visits offered through STEM Days on the Go are available for students in grades 3 through 10. Not every lesson is suitable for every grade level due to differences in curriculum standards and understanding. However, some lessons may be adaptable for multiple grade levels. Current lessons and the recommended grade levels are outlined in our course catalogue.
- When is the STEM Days on the Go team available?
The STEM Days on the Go team is available to provide in-person STEAM lesson visits throughout the school year on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Monday and Friday visits may be available on a limited basis to meet the unique scheduling needs of your school. Please note that STEM Days on the Go STEAM visits will be scheduled to start no earlier than 9:00 am and are meant for delivery during normal school hours.
- How long are the lessons?
Most of our STEAM lessons last for one hour. It may be possible to shorten some lessons to accommodate your school’s scheduling needs, but we require at least 45 minutes to work with your students.
- Does my school need to provide teachers or chaperones for a STEM Days on the Go STEAM lesson?
Yes. While GSSM instructional staff will lead the lesson, we do require that students be accompanied by at least one adult who is familiar with their needs during the entire STEAM experience. Interested teachers, administrators, or parent volunteers are all welcome to join the fun!
- How do I schedule a STEM Days on the Go STEAM lesson for my school?
Click on the registration link above and complete the online registration. A program coordinator will be in touch to confirm your school’s needs after your request is submitted.
- How many students can be seen in a STEM Days on the Go visit?
The STEM Days on the Go team can serve up to 300 students in a one-day visit. Due to the interactive nature of our lessons, we prefer a maximum class size of 25 students per class. We require that each class be accompanied by at least one familiar school faculty or staff member for the duration of their STEAM experience.
- What would a STEM Days on the Go schedule look like?
The STEM Days on the Go schedule will begin no earlier than 9:00 am and conclude around 2 pm. Three schedule options are offered. Select the option that best fits your school.

- Is registration first come, first served?
Scheduling is based on available dates and program priorities. Early registration is recommended because dates fill quickly and flexibility improves scheduling opportunities.
- Can our school participate more than once?
There will be a fall and a spring registration. Schools may apply each semester. Preference is given to schools that are new to the program or have not participated recently to help ensure equitable access across South Carolina. Due to high demand and limited availability, participation is not guaranteed and is based on program priorities and scheduling capacity. If multiple grade levels at your school are interested in STEM Day on the Go, we encourage you to collaborate and submit one registration form to maximize your scheduling opportunity.
- How can STEM Days on the Go support our school's STEM goals?
The program complements classroom instruction by having students interact with engaging STEM concepts in unique ways. Students participate in hands-on STEM challenges and investigations designed to encourage problem-solving, collaboration, and critical thinking. All lessons are designed to support STEM learning objectives appropriate for the targeted grade levels. Activities often include collaborative, inquiry based learning experiences.
- Can homeschool groups participate?
