Oliver Rancu - President and Physics Leader
Hi, I am Oliver! I am a senior at GSSM and my favorite subjects are Physics, Calculus, and French. I plan on majoring in Biomedical Engineering and minoring in French in college. A fun fact about me is that I don’t have an appendix! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor is Cherry Garcia, but only while listening to the Grateful Dead. My favorite movie is The Godfather.
Ethan Mills - Vice President, Biology and Music Co-Leader
Hi, I am Ethan! I am a senior at GSSM and my favorite subject is Biology and I especially like learning about animals. I want to major in Biochemistry in college so that I can conduct research in the medical field and improve people’s lives. A fun fact about me is that I know fifty digits of pi. One of the best parts of being a SPARK leader is teaching others about things that I love. My favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor is Chocolate Therapy 100%. My favorite movie is Lady Bird.
Devin Laye - Chemistry Leader
Hi, I’m Devin! I am a senior at GSSM. My favorite subject is anything Biomedicine or Biochemistry related. college, I want to major in Bioengineering with a double minor in Spanish and Art History. Then, I hope to attend medical school and become a neurosurgeon one day! A fun fact about is that I lived in Mississippi when Hurricane Katrina came through. A tree even fell down on our house, and we had to take shelter in the local church’s basement! My favorite part of being SPARK! Chemistry’s leader is the creative license it provides. Growing up, Chemistry was always one of my favorite topics in school because the possibilities seemed endless. Now, through SPARK! Chemistry, I can introduce other kids – who are just like I was back then – to the fascinating world of Chemistry through awe-inspiring experiments that I get to design! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is DEFINITELY strawberry cheesecake! My favorite movie is Les Misérables - even though the musical is way better!
Lucia Brown - Math Leader and French Co-Leader
Hi! My name's Lucia, and I'm a senior here at GSSM. While I love math, I am also super passionate about foreign languages and economics! I don't know exactly what I want to study in college, but I'd like to find a way to meld my different interests together. Hopefully, I can end up doing something abroad! My favorite part of being a SPARK! leader is helping people find that "click" moment when they realize how a concept applies to their everyday life. It’s kind of magical when that happens! One fun fact about me is that I can sing the alphabet backwards (don't worry, I can sing it forwards, too). My favorite movies are Stand and Deliver, The Imitation Game, and Lady Bird. My favorite Ben & Jerry's flavor at the moment is Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Core, but stay tuned...I haven't even tried Justice ReMix'd yet, and I think that'll change my life.
Vansh Nagpal - Music Co-Leader
Hi, I’m Vansh and I’m a senior at GSSM. My favorite subjects are Physics and Calculus and because of this I would like to pursue Aerospace Engineering in college. A fun fact about is that I really enjoy experimenting with my guitar and learning how to play songs. I like all flavors of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and I like to try new ones every time I visit however my favorite so far is Cookies and Cream. Simplicity always wins. My favorite movie is Three Idiots.
Elena Morgan - Spanish Co-Leader and Chemistry Instructor
Hi! My name is Elena Morgan. I am a senior at GSSM and the leader of SPARK Spanish! My favorite subjects are Chemistry and Spanish, and I’m planning on majoring in Chemical Engineering in college. A fun fact about me is that I traveled to Portugal and Spain with GSSM this past year! My favorite ice cream flavor is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and I love the movie Tangled. My favorite part about SPARK is getting to work with so many students who are excited to learn!
Chisom Emetu - History Co-leader
Hi, I’m Chisom and I’m a senior at GSSM! My favorite subjects are Biology and Calculus. I plan on majoring in Biology and medicine in college. My family is originally from Anambra, Nigeria so I speak fluent Igbo. I love being a spark leader because I am able develop my own lesson plans and use history as a means of igniting meaningful discussions. History—more so than any other subject—calls for reflection. So, I lead with the intention of helping kids learn from our nation’s past and contribute to building a better future. I especially love that I get to give back my time to areas who truly need it. My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is Berry Sweet Mascarpone and my favorite movies are The Hunger Games trilogy.
Winnie Espinoza - Spanish Co-leader
Hi, I’m Winnie and I’m a senior. My favorite subject is English but I plan on majoring in Biology in college. A fun fact about me is that I am a Vegan! My favorite part of being a SPARK leader is that I love being able to spend time with younger kids and teaching them the subjects that I’m passionate about! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is the non-dairy Peanut Butter Half-Baked and my favorite movie is The Princess and the Frog.
Caroline Strinsky - History Co-leader
Hi, I’m Caroline and I’m a senior. My favorite subjects are Art and Psychology. In college, I plan to major in Child Development and someday I hope to have a career as a Nurse Practitioner/midwife. A fun fact about me is that I am originally from Seattle- GO SeaHawks! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is Peanut Butter Cup. My favorite movie is Good Will Hunting or Pride and Prejudice.
Justin Furgala - French Co-leader
Hi, I’m Justin and I’m a senior. My favorite subject is Biology and I hope to major in Neuroscience in college. A fun fact about me is that I have played ice hockey since I was five years old. My favorite part about being a SPARK leader is that I love working with kids and being able to create lessons allows me to express my interests and connect with kids on an academic level. My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is Peanut Butter Cup. My favorite movie is Miracle.
Liz Middleton - Literature Leader
Hi, I’m Liz! I am a senior, class of 2021. My favorite subjects are English and Math. I plan on majoring in Forensic Psychology and minoring in English for my undergraduate degree. A fun fact about me is that I am a huge fan of Shakespeare. I have read 15 out of 39 of his plays and 96 out of 154 of his sonnets. For me, the best part of SPARK is how dedicated everyone is to making sure that the students have the best experience possible. I have seen first hand how much effort all the leaders, members, and Mrs. Middleton put into making SPARK an enjoyable experience. I am excited to join SPARK and share my passion for Literature. My favorite Ben & Jerry's ice cream is Strawberry Cheesecake. My favorite movie is Anna Karenina.
Madeline Robertson - Computer Science Leader
My name is Madeline Robertson, and I am a senior at GSSM. My favorite subject is engineering, but I also love science. In college, I hope to major in mechanical engineering. My favorite color is #6429fd in hexadecimal color code. I love being a SPARK leader because it is fun to see a kid getting excited about the same things as me and helping expand on that excitement. I like Ben and Jerry's half-baked ice cream, but I am forever searching for a good ice cream flavor that has toffee but no coffee. My favorite movie is Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (the one with the whales).
Mason Nisbet - Marine Biology Leader
Hello! My name is Mason Nisbet, and I'm a junior at GSSM. My favorite subject is Biology, with a focus on marine environments/conservation. That being said, I hope to major in Marine Biology and study as a Marine Biologist around the world! Fun fact: I was SCUBA Certified when I was 16 years old! My favorite part of being a SPARK Leader is the freedom to choose a subject that interests me and teach it to younger students (and hopefully spark an interest in them as well). There are so many unique Ben & Jerry's flavors that it's hard to choose, but I'd say Peanut Butter Cup is always a classic, and my favorite movie is Crazy Rich Asians (a girl can dream, can't she?). I look forward to working with a diversity of young students and can't wait to talk about what I love: the ocean!
