Spark Student Leaders

Isabel Rancu – President, Chemistry

Hi, I'm Isabel! I'm a senior at GSSM, and my favorite subjects are Chemistry and Physics. Although I'm fascinated by STEM, I absolutely love history, literature, and foreign languages. In college, I'd love to major in Chemical Engineering, and maybe go to med school! A fun fact about me is that I can do a double bridge when shuffling a deck of cards (quirky, I know). One of the best things about being a part of SPARK! is getting to share and impart my passion for different subjects. I often see our students have the same passion and love for subjects as I did in middle school, so teaching them brings me immense joy. My favorite Ben and Jerry's ice cream flavor is Cherry Garcia, but this might change; my brother and I often find ourselves trying new flavors with every grocery store trip. My favorite movies must be The Dark Knight, Adventures of Tintin, and Casino Royale... can you tell I grew up with 2 older brothers?

Joshua Keable – VP for STEM, Robotics Co-Leader

Hi, I’m Josh! I am a senior at GSSM and my favorite subject is Math. I plan on double majoring in Math and Computer Science in college. My favorite part of being a SPARK! leader is seeing students get excited about our lessons. I think it’s so fun when students’ questions go above and beyond the lesson, and I love cultivating that curiosity. SPARK! has helped me develop a passion for teaching that will definitely influence my career decisions in the future.

Will Walker – VP for Humanities, Literature

Howdy-doody, Will here! I'm a lover of all things related to humans and society, and I am looking to be a social science major when I go to college (Pssst: Don't tell anyone, but I'm not actually that interested in STEM careers. I'm the humanities guy undercover at a STEM school). A fun fact about me: I'm a twin! See Harrison Walker, Co-Leader of SPARK! Math. You might not see it at first because of his hair, but we're mirror identical. Since that one's a little obvious, I'll let you know something else about me: I am William Alexander Walker IV, and the name goes all the way back to my great-grandfather. That's my prize for being first-born, Harrison was two minutes late. You snooze, you lose! I love SPARK! because I get to present the things that I'm passionate about in literature and the other humanities and hopefully get others to feel as passionate as I am about the things I love. In terms of ice cream, I believe I was most visionary at eight years old, and I stick to Cotton Candy. My favorite movie is anything Coen Brothers.

Jack Brent – Music

Hello! My name’s Jack, and I’m a Senior at GSSM. My favorite subject is math, or more specifically Applied Math. Because of this, I want to major in either Engineering or Physics so I can figure out how things work and use this knowledge to solve problems. A fun fact about me is that I started growing my hair out in second grade, my favorite Ben and Jerry’s flavor is the Tonight Dough, and my favorite movie is Avengers: Endgame. One of the best parts of being a SPARK! leader is learning how to work with other people to solve a common goal, even if you don’t know them that well.

Benjamin Chauhan – Computer Science

Hi, I am Benjamin, a senior at GSSM. My favorite subjects are Mathematics, Computer Science, and Chinese. I want to major in Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science so that I can research the applications of AI in various fields. One fun fact about me is that I can speak English, Polish, Chinese, and some Latin! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is 100% Chocolate Therapy - it just can’t be beat! As for movies, there are so many that I can’t decide on a clear favorite, but Three Idiots is up there.

Sanjeev Chauhan – Chinese, Robotics Co-Leader

Hi! My name is Sanjeev, and I’m a senior here at GSSM. I really love math, physics, and engineering. I also have been studying Chinese for many years. I’m super passionate about building robots for the First Robotics Competition and learning about other cultures. I hope to go to college for engineering and maybe physics or math. Fun fact about me is that I can speak Polish. My favorite part about leading spark is that I get to inspire kids to try new things. Trying robotics at my school introduced me into a whole new career field which I really enjoy. I am more of a Talenti and Haagen Dazs person than a Ben and Jerry’s person, but I will eat any flavor of ice cream. I don’t have a favorite movie, but one of my favorite books is The Three-Body Problem by Liu Cixin.

Aidan Driscoll – Physics

Hi, I am Aidan! I am a senior at GSSM and my favorite subjects are Physics and Astronomy. I currently plan on majoring in physics, but I have quite a few interests such as psychology and philosophy. A fun fact about me is that I am double-jointed throughout both of my arms. My favorite thing about being a SPARK! leader is having an impact on the people I teach. When I am teaching my favorite subject, I want others to see that and I hope to inspire you all to help your peers and learn something new! My favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor is Cherry Garcia. My favorite movie is Guardians of the Galaxy because of its excellent soundtrack.

Ainara Garcia - Spanish

Hi! I’m Ainara Garcia, and I’m a Senior at GSSM. My favorite subject is Engineering, and I plan to major in Computer Engineering in college. I love teaching and I love kids, so SPARK! was perfect for me. My favorite ice cream flavor is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and a fun fact about me is that my family is from Argentina. I speak Spanish fluently, and I can’t wait to teach it others.

Anne-Hackett Little – French

Hey y’all! My name is Anne-Hackett and I am a senior at GSSM. I have studied French since 7th grade and I love every minute of it. Although I have never been to France, I dream of eating pain au chocolat in a Parisian patisserie! I hope to study nutrition and psychology in college, and later attend MUSC for medical school. A fun fact about me is that I grew up in Hartsville and my great 4x grandfather was the founder of the town! Also, I have played varsity volleyball since 8th grade. My favorite ice cream is chocolate chip cookie dough and my favorite movies are Rocketman and The SpongeBob Movie (SpongeBob SquarePants is also my all-time favorite show).

Maggie Murrell – Government and Economics

My name is Maggie Murrell. I am the leader of the Government and Economics SPARK! division. I am interested in majoring in business in college, though I do not know exactly which specific field yet. I have taken four business classes so far at GSSM, two being Economics classes. I also took two AP government classes last year. My favorite movie is Mamma Mia. My favorite Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is salted caramel brownie. I am really excited to teach about Government and Economics, and I hope I can help create a fun way for your kids to learn about these important subjects.

Firdavs Nasriddinov – Math Co-Leader

Hi, I'm Firdavs and I'm a senior at GSSM. My favorite subjects are Computer Science and Calculus. In college, I want to major in Computer Science and minor in Math. A fun fact about me is that I can speak four languages and am learning Spanish. For me, the best part of being a SPARK! leader is seeing younger students' curiosities expand as they learn new concepts and ideas. My favorite Ben and Jerry's flavor is Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and my favorite movie is Interstellar.

Mason Nisbet - Environmental Science

Hello! My name is Mason Nisbet, and I'm a senior at GSSM. My favorite subject is Biology, with a focus on marine environments/conservation. That being said, I hope to major in Marine Biology and study as a Marine Biologist around the world! Fun fact: I was SCUBA Certified when I was 16 years old! My favorite part of being a SPARK Leader is the freedom to choose a subject that interests me and teach it to younger students (and hopefully spark an interest in them as well). There are so many unique Ben & Jerry's flavors that it's hard to choose, but I'd say Peanut Butter Cup is always a classic, and my favorite movie is Crazy Rich Asians (a girl can dream, can't she?). I look forward to working with a diversity of young students and can't wait to talk about what I love: the ocean!

Yashvi Patel – Biology

Hi, everyone! I’m Yashvi, a senior here at GSSM and the leader for Spark Bio! I am interested in a lot of subjects, but my favorites include biology (of course!), chemistry, and psychology. I would like to find a way to study all these sciences in an interdisciplinary fashion in college. Particularly, I’m interested in areas like neuroscience, psychiatry, and behavioral biology. I love Spark because it’s an outlet for leaders and tutors to form lessons and experiments and learn along the way, but also it gives us the opportunity to show younger students what's so fascinating about these subjects. A fun fact about me is I can sing the lyrics to pretty much every Taylor Swift song in existence! Also, I’m a huge fan of Harry Potter and really enjoy nerdy science jokes :) My favorite Ben & Jerry’s flavor is Cookies and Cream Cheesecake Core (so good!) and my favorite movies include Inception, 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, and the Jurassic World series.

Trent Seaman – Latin

Hi, I’m Trent! I am a senior at GSSM, and my favorites subjects include mathematics, physics, Latin and more. I am currently unsure of my major in college, but hopefully I will find a study path that incorporates one or more of these interests. A fun fact about me is that I was born in Ukraine. My favorite part of being a SPARK! leader is spreading my love for science and language to others in a way they can appreciate. I enjoy all flavors of Ben and Jerry’s, but the best is without a doubt Mint Chocolate Chip. My favorite movie at the moment is Fight Club.

Nathan Stolzenfeld – History

Hello! My name is Nathan, and I am a senior at GSSM. My favorite subjects in school are government or history, and I plan on majoring in either of those two subjects, with perhaps a minor in economics or environmental science thrown in there before I go to law school. A fun fact about me is that I have had seventeen surgeries throughout my life, making me a connoisseur of hospital food throughout the country. One thing I am looking forward to with being a SPARK! Leader is being able to get kids interested in the niche areas of history because there is so much of it. Sticking to a classic, my favorite type of ice cream regardless of brand is plain chocolate. A bonus fact is that I love Will Walker more platonically than he loves me.

Harrison Walker – Math Co-Leader

Hey there, I'm Harrison, and I'm a senior at GSSM. My favorite subjects are Math, Biology, and Spanish, though I love the Social Sciences. I intend to major in Urban or Environmental Studies for undergraduate, potentially minoring in Mathematics, or Linguistics, or maybe both, I haven't decided yet! I then hope to go to graduate school in Urban Planning, and enter that field. A fun fact about me is that I am a Mirror-Identical Twin with Will Walker, SPARK! Literature Leader and Vice-President of SPARK Humanities (I was born second, and I never live it down). I can also say that I have broken my left arm three times, and my fingers are crossed that there won't be a fourth! I love SPARK! because I have always been fascinated with the parts of academia that aren't covered in school because they aren't "necessary" or "standard" and I feel like SPARK! gives us an opportunity to teach topics just because they're interesting, and not necessarily because they're going to be on a test. My favorite ice cream flavor would be raspberry chocolate chip, and my favorite movies are The Hudsucker Proxy, That Thing You Do, and Shawshank Redemption. I hope to see you at a SPARK! lesson soon!
