GSSM is working closely with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to monitor the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus, which causes an illness termed COVID-19. GSSM is actively monitoring and following the DHEC guidelines for schools related to this illness.

The virus was first identified in the city of Wuhan, China in December 2019. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Cases have been confirmed in several other countries, including the United States. However, at this time, no cases have been identified in South Carolina.

As a part of DHEC's ongoing outreach efforts, they have requested that we share the following information with our GSSM community. As DHEC learns more about this virus, they will continue to update their website at scdhec.gov/COVID19. In addition, please see below for links to additional outreach materials for your use:

Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, GSSM has recently made the decision to cancel a planned summer research experience with our partner school in China. We are closely monitoring travel advisories issued by the U.S. Department of State and the CDC in making decisions about other trips. No other courses with travel have been canceled at this time.

GSSM will continue to monitor these conditions and make decisions in consultation with our administration, local and state officials, and to provide regular campus updates regarding COVID-19 as needed.
