The Residence Hall
The Residence Hall
Students at GSSM live in single gender dorms, two to a room. Each dorm room at GSSM has:
- two XL twin beds (that can be bunked)
- two two-shelf bookcases
- two chests of three drawers
- two desks with three drawers
- two chairs
There is a sink and a mirror in each room. Rooms are arranged in suites, so four students share a bathroom with a tub, shower and toilet. There are also common areas outside the residence hall where students can visit and study with members of the opposite sex. Students often hang out in the cafeteria between classes and in the afternoons. See a sample room layout (PDF)
Personalizing Your Room
Students may bring lamps, room rugs, chairs or bean bags, and wall decorations like posters (don’t forget to bring thumbtacks to hang them with). Bring some photos of your family and friends to put up on the walls! Many students also bring a mini-refrigerator; students are allowed one mini-fridge per room. Snacks and drinks may be stored in student rooms in closed containers. Download a list of what to bring and what NOT to bring (PDF)
Each residence hall has a TV lounge with a television, furniture, a microwave, and games, and a separate study lounge with dry erase boards, notebooks from previous classes with notes, tables, couches, and chairs. These areas are available all day, every day, but the TV cannot be on during QUEST (Quality, Uninterrupted Enforced Study Time), and students must be quiet and respectful of others.
Each floor comes equipped with an iron and an ironing board, along with 2 coin-operated washing machines and 2 coin-operated dryers. Each machine requires 4 quarters per load. We've installed LaundryView, an Internet application that allows you to monitor the status of washers and dryers in connected laundry rooms through a Web browser. LaundryView's mission is to help you save time by providing information about the current state of laundry room equipment wherever you have access to a browser or e-mail messages.
Student Activity Center
The Student Activity Center is available to students when an RA is on duty and has club meeting areas, a pool table, an arcade, a TV lounge and a kitchen that students may use.
