College Counseling and Advising
World-Class College Advising
In response to enrollment growth at GSSM, and the hiring of a new Director of College Counseling and Advising in 2016, GSSM's College Counseling staff now provides highly personalized guidance and support to every student during the college search and application process. All of our staff have graduate degrees and experience as admissions officers and/or instructors in higher education. Our individual expertise includes essay writing support, NCAA athletics, scholarships and financial aid and assisting first-generation students.
Our best-in-class approach to the college counseling process provides students and parents direction in discovering colleges that are a good “fit” for each student—academically, socially, personally, and financially. In this process students will learn more about their aptitudes, interests and why a good fit college is more than name recognition or prestige-- it’s about finding where you can succeed and launch your career or graduate school preparation.
Juniors arrive at GSSM in the fall and are encouraged to focus on adjusting to GSSM: the academic rigor of GSSM classes, learning time management and study skills, and how to balance their lives while learning virtually. All juniors participate in several college planning information sessions in the fall, and are encouraged to participate in virtual and in person college representative visits to GSSM. Early in their GSSM career, juniors will be invited to Scoir, a online platform for students, parents, counselors, and colleges focusing on finding the right fit through a unified college search and planning network.
College Planning Seminar I classes begin in the spring, with sessions on:
- The college search
- Costs, scholarships and financial aid
- Campus visits and interviews
- College essays
- Requesting teacher letters of recommendation
- Case studies on the application process and review
As part of Scoir, students complete the YouScience profile, learning about college majors and career paths that incorporate their aptitudes and interests. Juniors also complete the Corsava Card Sort to identify characteristics of colleges that are most important to them. Each student has at least one individual conference with their college counselor early in the spring, followed by optional parent/student meetings offered via Zoom or conference call. One-on-one college planning continues in the fall of senior year in College Planning Seminar II. GSSM’s college counselors also write letters of recommendation for each student applying to college.
College Planning Seminar II includes sessions on:
- How to balance your college list
- Completing the Common Application and Coalition Application
- Applying for scholarships and need-based financial aid
- Preparing for interviews
