Concentration
Videos, background reading, and discussion questions
A solution is a mixture of two or more substances in which dissolved particles are distributed evenly throughout the solution. The substance that dissolves in a solution is called the solute, and the substance that does the dissolving is called the solvent. The concentration of a solution is the amount of solute in a given amount of solution. A solution with a lot of dissolved solute has a high concentration and is called a concentrated solution. A solution with little dissolved solute has a low concentration and is called a dilute solution.

5.E.3A.1

Erosion in Rivers
Activity and lesson plan
Students learn about water erosion through an experimental process in which small-scale buildings are placed along a simulated riverbank to experience a range of flooding conditions. They learn how soil conditions are important to the stability or failure of civil engineering projects and how a river's turns and bends make a difference in the likelihood of erosion. They make model buildings and then see how their designs and riverbank placements are impacted by slow and fast water flow over the soil. Students make predictions, observations and conclusions about the stability of their model houses and develop ideas for how to mitigate damage in civil engineering projects.
