Should I Apply?
Not sure if GSSM is the right fit? You’re not alone. Applying to a new school is a big decision, and it’s normal to have questions. This page covers the most common things students ask us while they’re deciding whether to apply. Take your time. And if you still need answers, we’re here to help!
- How does GSSM evaluate my application for admission?
GSSM uses a holistic review process, where information from your application, essays, transcript, school counselor form and letters of recommendation are all considered. A strong academic record, as evidenced by high school courses and grades, is very important. Our review process includes evaluations from both admissions staff members as well as our faculty members. Students who are the most competitive in our initial review process are invited as Finalists to Interview Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026.
- What GPA is considered competitive for admission to GSSM?
Competitive applicants will have consistently high grades, including mostly A’s, in all academic subjects. The average unweighted GPA for the enrolling Class of 2027 was 3.94 on a 4.0 scale.
- How important are the Essay submissions on my application?
Your essay responses allow us to learn more about your interests, both in and out of the classroom, and why you would like to attend GSSM. Your responses are important for us to learn more about you, however there are no right or wrong answers to these questions. Keep in mind a few sentences or a paragraph may suffice in responding to the questions. Need more guidance? Check out this helpful video: Admissions Hacks: Tackling the Essays.
- How are my test scores evaluated?
Math test scores, whether from the PSAT, SAT, ACT, Pre-ACT or GSSM’s Math Admissions Test, are all valuable in assessing your competencies in math, especially algebra and geometry.
- How/when do I submit/upload my test scores?
As soon as scores are available, you may upload the PDF of the score report to your application portal. Score uploads can be completed BEFORE or AFTER submission of the application for admission.
- What math test score is competitive for admission to GSSM?
For the PSAT: 550 or higher; for the SAT: 600 or higher; for the Pre-ACT or ACT: 25 or higher. Students with math scores lower than these scores are strongly recommended to take GSSM’s Math Admissions test, offered in February. We do not have any cut off or minimum test scores for admission.
- What should I do if my teacher hasn’t completed the recommendation?
We encourage you to speak directly with the recommender to ensure they are aware a request was sent to them. Before you submit your application, you can send a reminder to your recommender.
- How and when does my school counselor complete their form and send in my midyear transcript?
As of January 12, 2026, you can enter the name and contact information for your school counselor in your application portal and request the school counselor form and midyear transcript. To meet the Priority Application Deadline, receipt of the counselor form, transcript, application, recommended test scores and letters of recommendation by February 15 are required.
- How important are my extracurricular activities on my application for admission?
We are very interested in knowing more about your interests and activities outside of the classroom. While academic preparation is most important, GSSM seeks students who have an interest in participating in the GSSM school community through clubs, sports, the arts and leadership opportunities.
- When do I hear if I am a Finalist and invited to Interview Day?
Applicants who are selected as Finalists and invited to Interview Day will be notified the week of March 16, 2026. Interview Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026. Invited students will be assigned a time to meet in a group interview session with current GSSM students, faculty and staff.
- When are admissions decisions released?
Students whose application files are completed by February 15 will receive an admissions decision in their application portal by Friday, April 10, 2026.
- When can I visit campus?
Our final Preview Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026. There is no charge to attend. Visit www.scgssm.org/PreviewDay to get more information and register.
- What are my chances of admission if I miss the Admission Priority Application Deadline of February 15?
You should make every effort to apply and complete your application by February 15. This includes receipt of the counselor form, transcript, application, recommended test scores and letters of recommendation by February 15. Students who apply later will only be considered on a space-available basis. Applying by the priority application deadline ensures you receive full consideration for Interview Day and receive an admissions decision by April 10, 2026.
- What does it cost to attend GSSM?
As a public school, tuition and fees are paid for by the State of South Carolina. The state also covers the cost of the residence hall room. The only direct cost is for the meal plan, currently at $3,360 for 2025-2026. Families who qualify are eligible for financial aid to cover this cost. Visit www.scgssm.org/admissions/fees-financial-aid for more information about financial aid.
