Athletics

You don’t have to leave your favorite sports behind when you come to GSSM! We have 16 Varsity teams that compete–and win–throughout the state, and more than 65% of our students participate. All teams play at the class A level within the South Carolina High School League. To play for GSSM, you'll complete necessary health paperwork once you are admitted.

We're Successful On the Field, Too

GSSM has won 4 team state championships since 2017 (Boy's XC-'17, Volleyball-'18, Boy's Soccer-'18, Girl's Track & Field-'19) along with 7 individual state championships (2018).

In partnership with Hartsville High School, GSSM students may tryout and participate on teams for sports that GSSM does not currently offer such as baseball, softball, wrestling, and marching band. The GSSM academic and residential program requirements take precedent if a student does play on a team at Hartsville High School.

Keeping Active at GSSM

On Campus Weight Room

Our gym boasts an active weight room open to faculty, staff, and students looking to stay fit. Teams often use this space for conditioning and weight training.

Local Hartsville YMCA

GSSM arranges for all students to be able to access the facilities of the local YMCA. The Hartsville location offers a pool where the swim team practices and hosts meets, has specialized workout equipment, hosts specialized workout classes, and is just a short walk downtown! Many of our students enjoy going to the Y for an early morning workout!

Safe Sport School

By the efforts of our wonderful ATC, the National Athletic Trainers' Association has awarded GSSM a certificate of achievement in recognition of the superior efforts made by the Governor's School for Science and Mathematics to protect its young athletes. Our school is awarded the First Team designation because it accomplished all requirements outlined in the Safe Sports School Award application. It is not an easy award for which to qualify and we are very proud to have achieved it!

Supportive and Highly Qualified Coaches

Our combined 24 coaches, alongside the Athletic Director, Assistant Athletic Director, and Athletic Trainer, provide fundamental teaching for first-time athletes, as well as rigorous training to make all student athletes better. All coaches are required to complete mandatory training for the safety of student athletes in the following areas: Concussion in Sports, Heat Illness Prevention, Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and Protecting Students from Abuse.
