By day Joe Gardner designs software, but in his free time, he likes to compete in triathlons and has even completed five Ironman competitions.
Gardner graduated from GSSM in 1993 and went on to attend Georgia Tech, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1997.
“I often describe GSSM as two of the best years of my life,” he said. “You’re just constantly surrounded by these incredibly bright and driven peers.”
That sort of environment is something that Joe has tried to emulate in his career. He often seeks out workplaces that are full of the same motivated and challenging individuals.
After two years at Westinghouse Electric Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he moved to Austin where he has worked for a variety of companies including Trilogy, AMD, the City of Austin and Whole Foods Market.
He is currently the Principle Software Architect at National Instruments. In 2006, he earned his MBA from the University of Texas.
But in Joe’s free time, like likes to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run a full 26.2-mile marathon. He’s a serious triathlete! All in all, he has completed over 20 triathlons, including five difficult and strenuous Ironman competitions.
“Most triathletes want to do an Ironman, at least one,” he said. “It’s sort of that big goal. You’ve accomplished something that’s very challenging.”
Joe’s advice for current and future Govies?
“Be true to yourself. Be who you are. Follow your dreams, follow your passions.”
