Selen Berkman and Crystel Sylvester to be recognized by NCWIT

GSSM junior Selen Berkman, daughter of Minis and Mert Berkman of Greenville, is one of six S.C. high school students to receive the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) Award for Aspirations in Computing. GSSM senior Crystel Sylvester, daughter of John and Ruvina Sylvester of Dorchester, has been selected as a runner-up.

GSSM to Honor Clemson Professor Emeritus Dr. John C. Morse

GSSM will honor Dr. John C. Morse with its inaugural Distinguished Research Leadership Award during the 26th Annual Research Colloquium, Saturday, January 31, 10 a.m., Hartsville, SC. Morse began mentoring GSSM students in 1991 through the then newly established Summer Program for Research Interns (SPRI). Morse has been the longest actively serving mentor in program history and many of his students have gone on to pursue careers in scientific research as a result of his unique direction and unmatched influence.

GSSM Students to Host Statewide Robotics Scrimmage

Students at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) are hosting the school’s first-ever FTC Cascade Effect Scrimmage on Saturday, January 17, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at 401 Railroad Avenue, Hartsville, SC 29550. This scrimmage is open to all FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the state and will provide participants the opportunity to prepare for the South Carolina Regional Competition later in the month.

GSSM Begins Search for New President

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an experienced executive to lead the School as the current president has elected to retire. The president is the chief executive officer of the School and reports to the Board of Trustees. The presidency requires an advanced degree, preferably in science, engineering or mathematics, with a terminal degree preferred. Five years’ experience in a senior leadership position is required, with both academic and business experience preferred.

Way to go GSSM Academic Teams

Two GSSM Academic Teams were among the 10 teams from seven schools that competed at the Demon Deacon Challenge this Saturday at Wake Forest. Our A team steamrolled the competition going 9-0 for the day and winning by an average score of 370 to 87. Zach Bills (1st overall) and Ross Ferguson (7th overall) were the top scorers for the A team. The team has gone undefeated for the semester (17-0) with 2 tournament wins. As a result of their efforts, they have qualified for both the High School National Championship Tournament in Chicago and the National Scholastic Championship in Washington, DC.

Final Results from Cross Country Championships

Congratulations to all of the students who ran in the November 8, 2014 Cross Country Championships! The boys finished in 7th place. The girls did a great job, but didn't have enough participants to score as a team. Wonderful season!

GSSM Students Win SC Finance Challenge Competition

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) celebrates four students who won the SC Finance Challenge competition, sponsored by SC Economics. Daniel Beasley, son of Wes and Julie Beasley of Florence; Joel Fonseca, son of Manuel and Lynn Fonseca of Florence; Gavin Roser, son of Vince and JoAnn Roser of Spartanburg; and Sydney Erin White, daughter of David R. and Carol M. White of Florence, all participated in the statewide, online competition that took place from October 6 through October 24, 2014.

The GSSM College Guidance staff is hosting a College Planning Workshop for parents of juniors on Wednesday, January 21st from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm in the Gym.
