Fun & Games
There are plenty of clubs, groups and competitive teams at GSSM that cover a wide swath of interests, from video games to frisbee golf. If you can’t find one that suits you, we encourage you to create a group!
Athletics
You won’t have to give up sports to come to school here—GSSM has 13 varsity athletic teams as well as informal, intramural sports and games.
Leadership Opportunities
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to shine at GSSM. Any student can take on leadership roles by participating in student government, assisting the residence life staff or becoming a GSSM ambassador.

NextDr. O'Bryant shares her experiences at the National Society of Black Engineers Augusta Alumni Extension annual Awards Breakfast - visiting with GSSM alumni and being inspired by future engineers. Attending students were awarded scholarships, laptops with software and printers, and back packs.
As GSSM's class of 2013 heads off to college next year, many wonder how 100% of the student body manages to complete college and scholarship applications without their parent's constant support. The answer: GSSM's Guidance Department! Learn how they do it!
Dr. Zaria O'Bryant attended Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day at USC Aiken on May 4. Read her blog about how she worked with her sister, also an engineer, to introduce engineering to 30 middle school girls! Nice work!
Four months of planning, 430 gallons of ice cream, 10 dedicated committee members, 160 amazing govies and 1 Chef JJ all came together to create the world’s longest ice cream sundae. Committee member and GSSM junior Khayla Williams shares how they pulled it off!
The Outstanding Alumnus Award is presented annually by the GSSM Alumni Association to an alumnus who, through their post-GSSM education, work, and personal endeavors, has exemplified the success one can achieve through the foundation of a GSSM education. The GSSM Alumni Association is proud to announce that the 2013 Outstanding Alumnus Award will be presented to Eddie Nance, Class of 2000.
GSSM staff teamed up with the Columbia Urban League for a STEM Expo with approximately 200 middle school students. Dr. Zaria O'Bryant, Accelerate program administrator, shares the highlights from the day.
Everything we do at GSSM involves our students, and the Townes Award Dinner is no exception. Each year, GSSM juniors help out at the event and seniors present their SPRI research. Senior Joey Wilson and Junior Madeline McHugh share their experience attending this amazing event.

GSSM is pleased to announce Pamela Lackey, president of AT&T South Carolina, will serve as the commencement speaker during the School's 24th graduation ceremony Saturday, June 1, at the Center Theatre in Hartsville, 11 a.m. Lackey is the second female to speak at a GSSM graduation ceremony, the first being Doris Helms, provost of Clemson University, in 2010.

GSSM Senior Carl Garris, along with other members of the GSSM History Club, has created an exhibit for the Hartsville Museum chronicling the history of GSSM. Garris, son of Mike and Sandy Garris of Chapin, is a member of GSSM’s History Club and does regular community service at the Hartsville Museum.

One hundred twenty-two rising juniors have been invited to our residential program in Hartsville, SC, and 56 rising sophomores have been invited to the inaugural class of our Accelerate virtual engineering program.

The Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is accepting applications for GoSciTech, its week-long residential summer camps for rising 8th, 9th and 10th graders, until May 15, 2013. GoSciTech, held on GSSM's Hartsville campus, will be offered June 16-22, June 23-29 and July 7-13.

Thirty students from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) recently brought home 38 awards from the SC Junior Academy of Science (SCJAS) Annual Spring Meeting. The 2013 conference was held April 13 at the Benedict College School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Columbia, SC.

The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) celebrates nine students who won the National French Contest, or Le Grand Concours. Winners are considered to be the top ten scores in the state (SC) chapter and the top ten scores nationally.

The thirteen National Merit Semifinalists from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) have all been named National Merit Finalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). The finalists’ abilities, skills and accomplishments will be considered as the winners of the National Merit Scholarship Awards are chosen. Award announcements began this week and continue through July.

Dr. Carlanna Hendrick, American and European History Professor and Humanities Chair at GSSM, was recently named one of the five National Advisors of the Year for the 2012-2013 school year by the National History Club (NHC) and the Churchill Centre for her exceptional commitment to history education and the mission of the NHC.
