Health Services

In the event of illness or injury, GSSM students will be cared for by our skilled school nurses, available Monday - Friday 7 a.m. - 11 p.m., Saturday 7:30 a.m. -11:30 p.m., and Sunday 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Our nurses are contracted through Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center.

In the event of illness or injury requiring treatment from the hospital or a physician, parents are notified immediately. Our nurses administer prescription and over-the-counter medications and will determine the appropriate treatment plan or refer them to a doctor's office with parental permission. They monitor students with chronic conditions as needed and are advocates for health promotion and education.

All prescription medicines are kept in Health Services and require a permission for administration form signed by the parent or guardian and the child's physician.  If a student is prescribed a new medicine or a current medication dosage is changed during the school year, please have the following form filled out and signed by your physician and parent or guardian.

Counseling Services

Enriched academic programming for high school students brings many opportunities, but not always without its challenges and stressors. GSSM is pleased to offer on-site counseling as a part of the support services of our school. Students are able to access the resources of a licensed mental health professional in a setting that is convenient and comfortable to them, while being completely confidential.

Students may seek assistance for a variety of issues including relationships, homesickness, transitioning to residential living, stress and/or time management, anxiety, grief, depression, etc. These services are free to all enrolled students. In the event that intensive care is required, a student may be referred to a local therapist.

Students who need counseling beyond what can be reasonably provided by our wellness counselor/psychologist are expected to arrange for therapeutic services in their home communities under the supervision of their parent/guardian. This protocol is designed for the safety of the student. It also ensures that the entire family is engaged to support the overall wellness of the student. These mental health professionals work closely with our staff in partnering toward student success.
