General Maintenance Tech

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks a General Maintenance Technician. This is a permanent, full-time (12-month position, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina). Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

Responsibilities

This position is the Assistant to the Director.  Performs complex maintenance and repair tasks in such areas as carpentry, locksmith, electricity, heating, venting and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, boiler operation, and energy plant operations. Initiates preventative maintenance; recommends improvements to increase the efficiency of crews and equipment. Works with the GSSM Event Facilitator and Facility Director to assure forms are processed to meet all the needs of the upcoming event. Works with the Event Director/Host to see that all the necessary supplies/equipment are ready for setup day. Arranges a team to set up for the event on the designated day. Arranges and supervises the team for the day of the event to make necessary changes before and during the event. Breaks down and resets the event area for normal use. Works with the Facility Director to arrange office/classroom changes, new furniture deliveries, and all special set ups that occur. Works with the Facilities Director and the Summer Camp Coordinator to plan and execute summer work before, during and after summer camps.  Works with the Facility Director to prepare dorms for returning students after summer camps end.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment. Knowledge of tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in the designated trade. Knowledge of techniques, methods, requirements and practices used in the designated trade. Skill in the use of various trade tools and equipment. Skill in making emergency and general repairs and adjustments to equipment used in building and maintenance work. Ability to comprehend blueprints, plans and specifications. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to supervise subordinates. Ability to plan operations. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to use judgment and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision.

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma and trades experience related to the area of employment. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year-for-year basis for basis.
