Part-Time Spanish Instructor

Posted: 1 year 6 months ago

The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) seeks an exceptional part-time Spanish instructor to teach advanced high school students. An ability to teach French is a plus, but not a requirement. Candidates must have a master’s degree, PhD preferred, in Spanish or a related field. A teaching certificate is not required.

Courses at GSSM are modeled on a college-like schedule and teaching environment. Applicants should have experience teaching Spanish at a college or advanced high school level. Current Spanish course offerings include Spanish 2, 3, 4, and AP Spanish Language and Culture. In addition, elective courses above the AP level are offered in Spanish Literature/Language, Culture, and/or Linguistics. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach beginner through advanced Spanish courses. Experience with communicative, proficiency-based language instruction, ACTFL World Readiness Standards, and instructional technologies is required. Candidates are expected to hold office hours for students and will also have opportunities to develop and teach upper-level Spanish elective courses based on student interest.

GSSM is mission-driven to bring excellence and advanced STEM experiences to South Carolina’s most talented and motivated students. This part-time Spanish instructor will join a dedicated team of professionals working together to make that happen. GSSM teachers have an understanding of gifted learners, an enthusiasm for teaching driven high school students, and knowledge of effective pedagogy. Teachers share a desire to work collegially to create unique and innovative experiences for students within and outside the classroom.

Applications should include the following combined into a single pdf file: cover letter of application, CV, and teaching statement. Forward these materials to the department chair, Dr. Karl Rohr, at rohr@governors.school. Please include the word “Spanish” in the subject line. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Questions can be directed to Dr. Roberto Robles (rrobles@governors.school) and/or Dr. Chris Champi (cchampi@governors.school).
