GSSM Senior Salvador Torres Receives Full Ride To Rice University Through Match Scholarship

March 20, 2023

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (March 20, 2023) – South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) senior, Salvador Torres has been named a Match Scholarship recipient from the non-profit QuestBridge National College Match program, which will include a full scholarship to Rice University.

Torres, a native of Florence, S.C., attended West Florence High School prior to arriving at GSSM and received a QuestBridge Match Scholarship. The QuestBridge program removes financial roadblocks for qualifying students who have achieved high academic success to attend the nation’s leading universities.

“While it is incredibly competitive, the work was well worth it,” Torres said. “While it would have helped anyone, this opportunity has changed my life.”

Torres plans to major in Engineering, and he’s still deciding on what track he’d like to take because he’s interested in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Hardware and Robotics. The Florentine is slated to graduate from GSSM in May and appreciates the discipline, structure and opportunities that the school has provided.

“GSSM has molded me into someone my past self would look up to,” Torres said. “The rigorous coursework set good habits into my lifestyle. I've met amazing people as fellow students and professors and have generally become more active, both socially and physically. GSSM has allowed me to grow as a student and an individual, and I couldn't be more grateful.”

GSSM is now accepting applications for the 2023 – 2024 school year. GSSM can help you prepare for college and a career in STEM. To submit an application, please visit www.scgssm.org/apply.
